Mr. yuk means no!

What is a Poison?
A poison is something that can make you sick. There are many different kinds of poisons: solids, liquids, sprays, and invisibles.  ALWAYS ASK FIRST before eating or drinking anything! Some things that are OK for grownups are bad for kids.

Some things that are good for you can also be dangerous if you use too much. Vitamins and medicine help you - but only when you use them correctly. What are some other things that are only good for you in small amounts?

Some things can only be safe if used in certain ways. You can wash your clothes with detergent, but you don't want to eat it! What other things are OK to use one way, but not OK to use in other ways?

Some plants can give you a rash if you touch them and other plants can make you really sick if you eat them. Can you think of any plants you know that can poison you?

Some animals are pets and other animals are dangerous. Animals can poison you, like this rattlesnake! Can you think of any other animals that are poisonous?

What is a solid poison?
A solid poison is chunky and chewable- like air fresheners, pills, vitamins, powders, and many, many more.

What is a liquid poison?
A liquid poison can be watery, creamy, blobby, and any color from pink to green - like bleach, furniture polish, perfume, nail polish remover, and many, many, more.

What is a spray poison?
Spray poisons can be aerosol sprays or pump sprays- like hair spray, window cleaner, oven cleaner, insecticides, and many, many, more.

What is an invisible poison?
You can not see, touch, feel invisible poisons- car fumes, charcoal grill fumes, nail polish fumes, marker fumes.  Tell a grown up anytime you smell anything different or "funny".

Who gets hurt by poisons?
Everyone! Kids, parents, grandparents and even pets can get poisoned!

Where are poisons found?
You can find poisons in lots of places where you live and play. Can you think of where some poison might be in your house?

Teachers

The Poison Center has a Teacher's packet designed to teach poison prevention to pre-school through 6th grade students. The packet comes with reproducible teaching lessons and activities. The packet is available free to West Virginia teachers! Please contact our administrative office at (304) 347-1212  or check out the Educational Materials section of this website for more information.

As part of the West Virginia Poison Center's educational program an electronic newsletter has been created for West Virginia educators. This newsletter will contain informational updates and will be sent out as needed regarding incidents that could affect West Virginia students. For example, the fall of 1999 West Virginia encountered a surge in the number of teenagers abusing jimson weed. The Poison Center has informational materials that could be distributed at PTA and teacher meetings regarding abuse of this plant. If your school (West Virginia schools only) is interested in this free service please have someone from your school contact the Community Outreach Coordinator, Hallie Dunlap at (304) 347-1379.
